THE RESTORATION
WHAT IS RESTORATION FOR ME?
To restore means to refurbish or bring back in good condition, through appropriate interventions, an artifact or a work of art.
Restoration is an activity linked to the maintenance, recovery, restoration and conservation of works of art, cultural heritage, monuments and in general historical artifacts, such as for example an architecture, a manuscript, a painting, an object, whatever it is, to which a particular historical, artistic, cultural value is recognized.
«If a chair breaks, it gets repaired, but if the chair is from Brustolon, it gets restored»,
a correct restoration inserts the work fully into the commercial art market.
A bad restoration can, on the other hand, even damage the work and, of course, will lead to its depreciation.
A correct restoration starts from a preliminary investigation of the conservation status of the work, which cannot be ignored for a correct evaluation of the necessary interventions.
Proper restoration restores historicity and pictorial dignity to the work, giving back its original aesthetic appearance and increasing its commercial value.
Restoration works in the scientific field, according to well-defined and tested processes and techniques which, if not known or poorly applied, degrade the interventions at the level of “bricolage”, with consequent impoverishment of the economic and artistic value of the work itself.
RESEARCH
Scientific and technological knowledge represent a fundamental basis for the knowledge and characterization of works of art and above all for their conservation.
The chemical-physical analyzes are in fact mainly aimed at the material of which the asset is made.
The recognition of the constituent materials, their modifications over time and sometimes the previous restoration interventions give a decisive contribution not only for the historical-artistic location of the work but also for the evaluation of the state of conservation and for the planning of a correct restoration.
THE DESIGN APPROACH
In the design of a restoration intervention, it is necessary to make use of operational choices and materials that do not contravene the general ethical principles related to the conservation of works of art (Code of ethics of the Restorer-Conservator).
The development of a restoration project must therefore include a preliminary study phase of the work.
Once the modifications and / or partial and / or total alterations of the operation have been verified, you will be able to proceed with the choice of materials, exploitation and methods of intervention.
Each restoration is specialized in relation to the different types of works.
THE MAINTENANCE
The maintenance operations performed on the work of art guarantee the persistence of the efficiency characteristics of the restoration performed.
Careful scheduling of deadlines is required that takes into account the modifications and variations in degradation.
It follows that each work will have different maintenance criteria.
